SURE ANSWERS THE FAIRTRADE CALL
Sure staff in the Channel Islands and Isle of
Man have been answering the call of Fairtrade Fortnight.
Free samples of various products have been
available at the company’s headquarters in all three islands, as
well as the exchanges in, Sark, and Alderney.
Sure is already a Fairtrade Partner in
Guernsey, and has run similar promotions in previous years. However
this is the first time the activity has included the other islands,
where staff have been getting through a range of goods, from hot
drinks to fruit and cereal bars.
Sure Operations Support Manager Janet
Brookfield organised the initiative.
"It was a resounding success with staff last
year, and we are hoping to build on that. We are really grateful to
Heidi and Phil of Mondomundi, who provided the “try before you buy”
samples. We’ve got the usual teas and coffees, as well as great
cookies, nuts, and juices, and the idea is that if staff like them
they will hopefully go out and buy them in future," she said.
Products that carry the Fairtrade brand
guarantee that farmers in some of the world’s poorest countries
receive a better price for their produce. Profits from the sale of
these goods are also used to fund infrastructure projects that can
improve the quality of life of people living in these
communities.
"The great thing about Fairtrade is it is
simple. It is just about making little changes to what we buy,
which can help make a big difference," said Mrs Brookfield.
The Guernsey headquarters at Centenary House
will also receive a visit from Hugo Villela, who works for a
co-operative society that provides funding for projects in the
developing world. He will be sharing his experience of working with
Fairtrade producers in Central and South America.
