Sure flies flag
Ten newly made parish flags have been raised on
the SeaGuernsey mast in St Peter Port, which Sure partly
sponsors.
The parish flags will form part of the island’s
Liberation Day Celebrations on 9th May.
Shane Langlois, the chairman of the Guernsey
Douzaine Council says that the mast has become an important icon
for the island.
“The Guernsey Douzaine Council is delighted to
be coordinating the parish flags for 2008. It is important that the
ten parishes of the island, who have funded the flags, are
displayed on the mast at the gateway to Guernsey.”
“It has quickly become a significant and
popular landmark in St Peter Port and we feel that the island as a
whole has contributed to its success.”
“This is the third year that the parish flags
have been on display but we need to replace them each year as the
strong winds and general weather conditions damage them beyond
reasonable repair.”
Sure, Deutschebank and Long Port Group sponsor
the mast. Deputy Mike O’Hara, the Minister of the Culture &
Leisure Department, believes that corporate support of this kind is
a vital cultural contribution to the island.
“I am extremely pleased that Cable &
Wireless, Long Port Group and Deutsche Bank have again agreed to
support us in this way. We view the mast as a symbol of our
historic relationship with the sea and as a talisman for future
island prosperity. We are extremely proud of St Peter Port and the
harbour area which is recognised internationally as one of the most
attractive in Britain. The support that we get from these
organisations means that we can further enhance the environment and
the visitor experience during the summer months.”
The parish flags will remain on the mast until
the beginning of October.
