Cable fault in high street
Contractors working in the High Street over the
weekend damaged a telephone cable leading to a disruption of
services for some businesses.
Wave’s contractors were working in an area of
the High Street outside Marks and Spencer when damage was caused to
a Cable & Wireless cable.
Cable & Wireless engineers carried out
repairs on Saturday and Sunday, however some properties were still
affected this morning. All services are expected to be restored
later today.
Russ Sharman, chief technical officer for Cable
& Wireless, said that it was an unfortunate accident, and the
company was satisfied that the contractors had taken all
appropriate measures to avoid such an incident.
“Unfortunately the cable that was damaged was
laid more than 60 years ago and the mapping records were not as
detailed. The contractors took all appropriate action in the
planning process of the excavation.
“Our engineers worked from the time of the
damage to repair the cable and should have it completed by the end
of today. We apologise to those businesses affected by the fault,”
he said.
