UK Decision to Enable Universal Access to Broadband
Welcomed
Cable & Wireless has welcomed today’s
announcement from the UK Government that there should be universal
access to broadband but added that it will have no impact on the
Channel Islands.
“Obviously we believe there are huge benefits
in allowing as many people as possible to have access to the
internet as it is a huge resource for information, socialising and
entertainment and so we welcome any moves to make that possible,”
said Cable & Wireless’ Head of PR Steve Smith.
“Although this announcement won’t have an
impact on the Channel Islands, we believe that Cable & Wireless
is already doing what it can to enable universal access to
broadband through our investment in infrastructure and our
commitment to offering a high level of service at a competitive
price.”
Mr Smith said that customer demand for faster
broadband meant they would continue to invest in the
infrastructure.
‘Cable & Wireless is currently improving
the network through the installation of multi-service access nodes
across the island. This marks a new era in network development and
will allow Cable & Wireless to offer the latest innovative
services through new technologies as they become available,’ said
Mr Smith.
Earlier this year it was announced that
Guernsey is now in the top 10 in Europe for high speed internet
access following a 16% increase in fixed line broadband subscribers
in the island in 2008.
There are now more than 18,000 ADSL broadband
customers in the island who all have access to Cable &
Wireless’ 2MB service. Customers can then choose to upgrade to 4MB
or 8MB depending on their needs.
