Telephone kiosks at bus terminus renovated
Sure is restoring the two telephone kiosks at the South
Esplanade bus terminus to their former glory.
The kiosks, which are the K6 model designed to commemorate the
silver jubilee of King George V in 1935, were last restored in 2002
when they were painted blue to match the corporate colour of Cable
& Wireless.
‘There are just four K6 kiosks left in the island and so we’re
delighted to announce that we will be restoring them to ensure that
this piece of the island’s telecoms’ history is preserved,’ said
Eddie Saints, chief executive of Sure.
The phone boxes will be returned to the yellow colour which
islanders will be familiar with.
‘The K6 was the first red telephone kiosk to be used extensively
outside of London but many islanders will remember them being
painted yellow. Yellow is the corporate colour of our Sure brand so
it will be a blend of history with the future,’ said Mr
Saints.
He added that the telephone kiosks will be unavailable during the
renovation.
‘The work is weather dependant and so we’re not able to give a date
when they will be back in use. The nearest kiosks are just a short
walk away in Church Square and we apologise to our customers for
any inconvenience caused.’.
