SURE SWIMARATHON GETS READY TO MAKE A BIG SPLASH

More than 1,000 swimmers will take part in this weekend’s Sure Swimarathon.
In just two weeks nearly 50 more teams have entered the annual fundraiser, which is organised by Guernsey Round Table and the Lions Club of Guernsey, and this year has the Guernsey Cheshire Home extension project as its main beneficiary.
“We are delighted that there has been a last minute flurry of entries as it means that we can raise even more money for Guernsey Cheshire Home which provides such an invaluable service to islanders. The care provided there ensures that residents enjoy as much independence and normal living as possible, making their own choices, and controlling their own lives in as close a family atmosphere as possible and I am sure that will be an inspiration to the swimmers over Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” said chairman of the organising committee Jeff Kitts.
This year’s event begins at 9am on Friday with the Sure Swimarathon At Large at St Sampson’s High when school teams will each swim for an hour and start the weekend’s lap tally.
The Lieutenant-Governor Sir Fabian Malbon and Lady Malbon will officially start the Sure Swimarathon at Beau Sejour at 2pm and the final swimmers start at 6pm on Sunday.
Highlights of the event this year include an Elizabeth College team swimming for three hours from 6pm on Friday evening and Grainville School, who will become the first ever entry from Jersey when they take to the water at 11am on Saturday.
Sponsor Sure will take over all eight lanes for an hour from midday on Saturday. Sure’s chief executive Eddie Saints said he was delighted his staff was giving so much support to the event.
“It’s fantastic for us as sponsor of the Sure Swimarathon to be able to take part and we’re all looking forward to Saturday. The Swimarathon is a much-loved part of Guernsey’s calendar and we’d like to thank the organising committee for all their hard work in making it happen year after year.”
The Sure Swimarathon takes place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday and last minute entries are still being received. More information is available from www.swimarathon.org or by contacting Angela Waters on 244728.
