10 Things to Check Before you Roam

  1. Does the country you are visiting have a roaming agreement with Sure?

If you are on post pay, you can check on our Pay monthly roaming list.  If you are on pre pay, you can check on our Pay as you go roaming list.

  2. Will your phone work in the country you are travelling to?

Most modern phones are dual band but some countries in the Americas require a tri band.

  3. Do you know your home country code?

For example, stored numbers with the  prefix 01481 or 07781 will only work from the UK. Whilst outside the UK, remove the “0” and add +44.

  4. Does your phone need to be manually connected to a network?

Some phones need to be manually connected which means going through your phone menu and making the phone search for a network.

  5. What is the coverage like in the country of destination?

Whilst roaming may be available in that country, the coverage may be poor. For example, Central Australia and some parts of North America have poor coverage. For full information visit GSM World.

  6. For pay monthly Roamer customers, remember that different networks have different charges.

If you contact us beforehand and tell us where you are going, we can advise you on which network is best to select in terms of cost and coverage.  If you move to Sure you will be able to benefit from our flat rate roaming charges.

  7. Both outgoing and incoming calls incur costs. Are you aware of those costs?

You must bear in mind that when someone calls you when you are abroad, that person is only paying for a local call. You are paying the cost of the call (and voicemail) being forwarded onto you wherever you are in the world.

  8. Do you know how to access voice mail whilst abroad?

You will need to dial +44 1481 700000, enter your mailbox number (which is your mobile number without the 07781 prefix) and then press #. You will then be asked to enter your PIN. The PIN will have been given to you when you first bought your phone. If you have not changed it since that time, the default is 0000.

  9. Will your charger work ?

Some only work on 240v and USA is 110v. You may need to purchase a travel charger.

  10. All Talk Roamer customers will need credit on their phone to ensure texting will work.

You can top up when you are away by any phone using your credit card — simply ring 0044 1481 700700.  Alternatively you can top up online.
