Cable & Wireless has outlined the next stages in developing innovative and exciting communication services to business leaders in the Isle of Man.

The Chairman of Cable & Wireless International, Lord Robertson of Port Ellen, was speaking at the Institute of Directors’ Lunch at the Sefton Hotel yesterday.

He said that Cable & Wireless has a long-term vision for the Isle of Man which would see the company develop a wide range of business and residential services for local customers.

The company is investing over £10m to deliver real choice and a realistic alternative for mobile customers in the Isle of Man, which would be the first step towards true competition.

Lord Robertson said: “Our investment in the Isle of Man is not limited to the development of mobile services for business and residential customers. Our ambition is to grow”.

“We aim to partner with local businesses, the government and the community to develop a full range of services that support the economy and the lifestyle of the Isle of Man”.

“Mobile is just our first step for customers in the Isle of Man - but it is an important step in delivering the benefits of competition - stimulating demand, encouraging innovation and promoting efficiency”.

Chief Executive of Cable & Wireless in the Channel Islands and Isle of Man, Geoff Houston, said: “A successful partnership with government and the community is key to the expansion of our business.”

“In Guernsey and Jersey, for example, we have invested in new connections for the Islands which are helping to support the business development ambitions of the local government for the economy.”

“We have also been first to deliver services such as the world-renowned mobile email device, BlackBerry and to develop roaming capabilities that truly support the international business traveler.”

“In the Isle of Man we are focused on bringing local customers more choice, innovation and value”.

Lord Robertson thanked the Manx community for their support. He said this had ensured the company was on track to deliver its new mobile service in early Summer this year.

Cable & Wireless has submitted full details of its network design to the Local Government and Environment department. The company is now seeking approval to proceed with the development of its network.

Lord Robertson said: “For Manx businesses, their staff and customers an exciting array of services will soon be available.

“Planning approval and the need to interconnect with the Manx Telecom network are critical factors that must be resolved in the coming weeks to deliver service to Isle of Man customers by this Summer”.
