Lord Robertson visit
17th January, 2007
Lord Robertson of Port Ellen, Chairman of Cable & Wireless
International, visited the Island this month to speak at the IOD
lunch and attend a dinner with guests that included the Lieutenant
Governor and Chief Minister.
With the launch of Cable & Wireless’s mobile network
expected by the summer, Lord Robertson reconfirmed the company’s
commitment to the Isle of Man speaking specifically of the
importance of creating successful partnerships with government and
the local community.
Prior to taking up his position on the Cable & Wireless
board, Lord Robertson served as a Member of Parliament for Hamilton
and the Hamilton Constituencies from 1978-1999 and after the
General Election in 1997, was appointed Defence Secretary by Tony
Blair. In October 1999 he became the 10th Secretary General of NATO
- his time coinciding with the events of 11th September in the US,
the creation of a NATO/Russian Council and NATO’s assumption of the
role in Afghanistan.
Having worked with these troubled areas, Lord Robertson surely
found the Manx welcome more receptive and in his speech to the IOD
thanked the Manx community for their support.
