Cable & Wireless - on course for summer service

2nd February 2007

Plans are developing apace for the new Cable & Wireless mobile service in the Isle of Man. By summer, the Manx public will be able to use the new service and reservation for numbers will be available soon.

Cable & Wireless is making a multi-million pound investment to deliver real choice and a realistic alternative for customers.

As specialists in island communications in 33 locations, Cable & Wireless offer mobile, broadband, domestic and international fixed line services to residential and business customers around the world. Markets now include the Channel Islands, Bermuda, the Seychelles and the Maldives. Over the last five years virtually all these have opened up to competition and now almost 95% of the company’s revenues come from competitive markets.

Geoff Houston, Chief Executive of Cable & Wireless in the Channel Islands and Isle of Man, said that the real winner is the consumer.

Cable & Wireless is the natural partner for island economies and well placed to deliver the benefits of competition to Isle of Man customers drawing on its experience in similar sized markets around the world

Investing over £40m to revolutionise communications in Guernsey, Jersey and Isle of Man, the company is developing a new generation of services bringing choice to customers. This is supplemented by a commitment to innovate and deliver more quality and value than ever before.

Mr Houston continued: “Manx businesses and consumers will benefit from the introduction of competition because for the first time they will have a choice and we encourage customers to take a look at all the mobile services on offer.”

The Isle of Man will benefit straight away from the International Frame Agreement Cable & Wireless has with Nokia. The agreement, signed last year, means mobile customers will be supported by networks that offer the very latest multimedia services, keep pace with developments and continue to offer the quality and coverage of proven global technology.

To begin with, high-speed EDGE coverage for data will be installed, which supports the latest innovations like the Apple iPhone and new BlackBerry devices.
