Sure supports mast monitoring.
News Release, 24th April
2007
Sure, the mobile service operated by Cable & Wireless, has
pledged its support for initiatives designed to raise public
confidence in the safety of mobile masts.
Mark Briers, Commercial Director of Cable &
Wireless in the Channel Islands said:
“We support the principal of independent
monitoring and will participate in processes which help our
customers to have confidence in the safety of mobile masts in
Jersey. We are a responsible company which takes public health
fears extremely seriously and so all our masts operate well below
the limits specified by international standards.”
Cable & Wireless has participated in a
similar process in Guernsey, which began with an audit of masts in
2005. The Office of Utility Regulation, working with UK regulator
OFCOM, found that each of the radio masts checked in Guernsey,
Alderney and Sark fell well within the safety standards established
by the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation
Protection. The process now undertaken in Guernsey ensures that all
current and planned masts continue to comply with these
standards.
Mr Briers said: “There is no reason why a
similar process cannot be implemented in Jersey and we will work to
achieve this.”
