MNP IS THE GREAT LEVELLER

When mobile number portability (MNP) is introduced on 1st December it will usher in an era of open competition and choice, according to Sure.
Graham Hughes, the operator’s Jersey Chief Executive, said:
“There will be offers around 1st December and there will be hype, that’s bound to happen. Once the dust settles, what MNP fundamentally is about is empowerment of customers.”
The introduction of MNP on 1st December 2008 will ensure consumers can choose the best value tariffs without having to change their mobile telephone number. MNP has been a requirement in the UK under the Communications Act 2003 and is also applicable in all EU countries.
Mr Hughes added:
“This is a fundamental shift for operators. Mobile customers, particularly businesses, will be much more able to move freely between networks. However, I don’t think that will guide their decision to change. Jersey mobile customers are still seeking superb value, great customer service and comprehensive network coverage. We’ve focused on delivering those things for the past two years so I’m confident that we’ll continue to enjoy a significant market share.”
Mr Hughes pointed to the launch of a dedicated business centre in 2008 as an example of competition working. He said:
“The feedback from the business community – small businesses in particular – was that they did not feel they had a real choice of network operator because of their designed stationery and livery. They also felt trapped paying high prices because all their stationary and livery had mobile numbers printed on it. In response, we’ve set up a small business team to focus on that market, based in our central town store, to give them the deals and service they desire. Competition does that – it creates innovation. The introduction of MNP will give businesses the opportunity to enjoy those benefits if they choose to.”
Mr Hughes said individuals will also benefit.
“Our Christmas offers – a free Wii or LCD screen TV with certain contracts – are the best deal we’ve ever offered. It’s the same for our Pay as you go offers. Competition is creating that culture of really sharp deals. It’s the customer who’ll benefit. What I would advise them to do though is really think about overall value from their mobile package and the service and network coverage on offer. If you are locked in for 12 or 18 months, the headline rate isn’t everything.”
